Camden Aquarium One of my Favorite Places in Jersey
To contact us Click HERE
I live in Camden, yes the same Camden you hear about as being one of the poorest cities in America. Yes the Camden that is known for it's drug dealers and prostitutes. What you don't hear about is the nice part of Camden, where I live, the Camden Waterfront.
I live in a luxury apartment with a view of Philadelphia, and the Ben Franklin Bridge. My neighbors are the beautiful campus of Rutgers-Camden, the baseball stadium of the Camden Riversharks, and the Adventure Aquarium.
As the father of a three year old, and avid fish lover, you would think I would spend a lot of time at the aquarium. Sadly, that isn't so, but we did get to visit it again this past Monday. I don't know who enjoyed it more myself, or my son, I, honestly, think it was me since nothing beats seeing the look on his face every time he sees those penguins or hippos.
If you haven't visited this treasure of the Garden State, do yourself and your kids a favor and get down here soon. Don't be put-off by anything you hear about Camden. The aquarium is located in a very nice area right on the Delaware River. In fact, my son and I walk the waterfront at least three times a week.
The Adventure Aquarium link above is to an article I wrote for Yahoo with all the details you will need to know, such as hours of operation, ticket prices, and features. Check it out for yourself, you won't be disappointed.

I have long been a fan of the guys at Weird NJ. I used to pick up copies of their magazines at the newstands. Then I got their book as a present. If you have not had a chance to check it out, do yourself a favor and get a copy. There is seemingly a place in just about everyone's neighborhood in the book, and most times you never even knew they existed. Much more than a book, it then becomes field trips to check out the places that interest you. Again, I can not begin to tell you how entertaining all this stuff ends up being, even if it is just urban legends, or are they?
Credit Card That Allows You to Track Your Kid's Spending
To contact us Click HERE
If you are a parent who gives your child an allowance, then you need to check out this credit card that not only allows you to load their allowance, but also track how they spend it. The benefits of giving your child a credit card over cash are primarily safety from them losing the money, as well as them knowing you will be able to know where they spent their money.
The Bill My Parents credit card goes way beyond that. The card will actually send you a real-time text or email letting you know where your child is attempting to make a purchase. You then have the option of allowing it or "freezing" the card. This cannot only be helpful in stopping your child from wasting their money, but also give you some insight into what they may be getting into.
The card can also be loaded by friends and relatives for special occassions like birthdays or graduation.

Martell's Tiki Bar Deal and More

Memorial Day weekend is here, and it looks like we are going to have great weather here in New Jersey. The choices of things to do are really unlimited, but should certainly include some outdoor time.
One of the things us Jerseyans love to do once Memorial Day weekend arrives is head to the Jersey Shore. Whether it is the beaches of Sandy Hook, with it's view of New York City, or the free, wide beaches of Wildwood, or anywhere between, there is surely a beach for everyone in our state.
My personal favorite is Point Pleasant. The beaches are clean, there are great rides and games for my son, and of course the great food. If you are anything like me then you need to check out this Martell's Tiki Bar Deal that I had emailed to me. You can purchase a $50 certificate for use there for only $25. When do you ever get a 50% discount on a meal, especially one at Martell's?
Another offer I had emailed to me which I thought was very intriguing was a $40 certificate for only$20 good towards a whale and dolphin watching trip off of Cape May. The offer, along with many more, is available at the KGB deals.
I hope you will be able to take advantage of these specials, if not this weekend, then in the near future. Meanwhile get out this weekend and enjoy this great state of JERZEEBABY!

My Son's Picture Makes It Onto a Yahoo Article
To contact us Click HERE
Some of you may know that I write for several different internet sites. One of those is Yahoo. I was recently reviewing some articles I had previously written and came across this article with my son's picture. To be honest with you I had practically forgotten I had written it and that it had his photo. Needless to say, this is again my favorite article.
They grow up so fast may be the truest words ever spoken. He will be four in a few months and has matured incredibly. He is super independent and even told me today he is going to take a plane to Philadelphia by himself. Being we only live across the Delaware River from Philly, I would probably be concerned if he said he was going to swim there.
Pretty cool to think his image will be on the internet forever. Hope I get to show him it when he becomes a teenager. He will hate that.

Beautiful Day on the Camden Waterfront

Finally, the sun is out. If this is what the end of the world looks like, then sign me up for the Rapture. I am also lucky enough to live on the Camden Waterfront, with a spectacular view of Philadelphia, just across the Delaware River.
Being that mom is away today, it will be a father and son day. We are planning to take a walk over to the Camden Riversharks baseball stadium located just under the Ben Franklin Bridge. On game days, the stadium is usually open for us to walk in and check out the men getting the field ready.
From there we will make our way along the beautifully bricked walkway next to the Delaware and head toward the Camden Aquarium. We won't be going to the aquarium today, however. Living just across the street from it, we only go on weekdays when the crowds are smaller. If you have never been to the Adventure Aquarium, it's real name, you really need to plan a trip there. It is truly amazing.
After passing the aquarium, we will head toward the Battleship NJ, which is docked on the Camden side of the Delaware. The sheer size of this ship is amazing, my son loves to look at it. We have yet to go aboard, he's only three and I think he would probably get bored halfway through the tour.
The Battleship is our turn around point. From there we will make our way past the boat docks and toward the Camden Childrens Garden. If you have young children, and are visiting the aquarium on the weekend you should check out the Childrens Garden. They have a train, you can ride on, a carousel, mazes, dancing water, and a butterfly house. We will definitely be stopping there.
Our next destination is actually located on the first floor of our building. Ritas, my so cannot go home without his vanilla cup. It may be hard for someone to believe that we enjoy living in Camden, but tell me can you do any of what we are doing today by just walking around the neighborhood? Didn't think so.

Dale Earnhardt Jr./Martin Truex Jr. Cribs Episode
To contact us Click HERE
New Jersey has many famous residents and many celebrities who were born in the Garden State and gone on to do great things. When it comes to auto racing, Martin Truex Jr. is currently NJ's biggest star. The Mayetta born driver currently competes for Michael Waltrip Racing in the Sprint Cup Series.
However, when he first made the move to the big time it was with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his father's DEI team. The two drivers had much in common as both came from racing families. They became and remain good friends.
While trolling Amazon I came across this video of an episode of Cribs on CMT that features not only Dale Jr., but also Jersey's own Martin Truex Jr. You can click the link to get a free preview.
Who knew a Jersey racer would ever be on Cribs?

Outer Banks Lighthouse
To contact us Click HERE
While we were on vacation, we needed some activities to do when the weather was bad. We spent one day at the outlets and one day at the Outer Banks Lighthouse area. We walked all around the water and the little boat docks. Brayden wanted to go over the big old bridge as soon as he saw it. He loved that it was a really old rickety bridge.

We walked down the walkway to the gazebo and looked at the water. We saw a bunch of geese and their goslings.

We found a new walkway that we had never tried during our previous visits to the lighthouse. It went through a little wetlands area. Brayden of course loved it, because it was basically like walking on a giant bridge. We found more geese and some frogs!

Taylor missed out on most of the walk. She spent almost the whole time fast asleep on Jon's shoulder. She woke up just as we were getting to the lighthouse.

This year, Brayden really wanted to walk to the top of the lighthouse. We weren't sure he was quite big enough to make it up all those stairs. We might have to try it next year!

Taylor woke up from her nap refreshed and ready to go! She is always so smiley and happy!

Brayden was bummed we couldn't have a beach day, but he had a great time at the lighthouse. As long as Brayden is outside he is happy. Throw in some water and some animals and he is thrilled. To make the day even more fun, we stopped at the town's little bookstore and picked up some fun books for the kids.

End of the Outer Banks Trip

Towards the end of our trip, the rain stopped, but the wind just kept blowing. Even with the high winds the kids had a blast. They both loved being outside and playing in the sand.

Both kids loved the toy net we found at the beach house. The net came to the beach with us each time we went down. Taylor loved swinging it around and waving it in the air. Brayden loved using it to catch crabs! We actually caught three crabs during our trip. Two on the beach using a bucket and one in our pool! We were walking back from the beach and found a crab stuck in our pool. We used Brayden's net to rescue the crab and set it free.

Our little beach babies were out at the beach before most people and stayed out on the beach after other families had all gone back inside.

We tried not to let the weather stop us from having fun, even if it meant wearing sweatshirts to the beach!

In some ways, the weather actually was kind of fun. At one point, all four of us were all hunkered down in the tent watching the waves. It was a nice moment being all smushed in together. None of us minded the weather or if we were smushed. We were just happy to all be together laughing and joking.

All in all, it was a great beach trip. The kids were great at traveling. We went out to yummy dinners. We ate way too many Duck Donuts. We watched some great lightning storms from our deck. Can't wait to head back down to Corolla later in the summer!

Strawberry Festival
To contact us Click HERE
When we returned from our beach trip, we were bummed to discover that we had missed strawberry picking at our favorite farm. After doing a bit of searching on the web, I found a farm that still had strawberry picking. Even better news, was when I discovered the town near the farm was having a strawberry festival! We decided to check out the Delaplane Strawberry Festival and then go strawberry picking right after!

The festival was a fun little event. There were some arts and craft vendors and a bunch of food vendors. We had a picnic lunch in the shade. After lunch, we went to visit with the animals. They had a small petting zoo area with sheep, goats, horses, and cows.

They also had pony rides! Brayden told the woman helping out at the pony rides that he wanted to ride the smallest pony. The woman took him over to this little tiny pony, perfect for Brayden. He had fun riding and was very talkative with the girls leading his pony around.

Taylor was a great sport at the festival. It was very hot outside and she didn't really enjoy sitting out in the sun. She was very happy when we took her out of the stroller and brought her on the hayride!

The festivals had some little games set up for the kids. Brayden played a few games and won little prizes. At one game, he picked out a little blue ring with a blue hand on it as his prize. He ran right over to me and told me he won it for me! I love my sweet little boy so much!!

After relaxing with some snow cones, we headed over to the Hollins Farms to pick some strawberries. The farm had a great crop of strawberries! We picked two containers full of ripe red juicy strawberries!

At this point in our trip, Taylor was pretty much done. She was tired and hot and you could just tell she was thinking how come this place doesn't have air conditioning. Even though you could tell she wasn't happy, she still never complained. Not one little cry. Just this adorable little look that clearly said she was ready to go home.

Brayden loved picking strawberries and took it very seriously. He checked over every strawberry very carefully to make sure it was perfect!

He did a great job picking them off the vine and making sure to not squish any.

After our visit to the farm, we all agreed we had found a great new place to pick strawberries! We took our delicious berries home and made a strawberry pie and strawberry muffins!

Taylor is Ten Months Old
To contact us Click HERE
Our baby girl is ten months old! Taylor is getting more and more lovable each day. Now not only does she have a big giant smile when she sees people she knows, but she also crawls right up to them and pulls herself up using their legs. She looks up at the person and sticks her arms out wanting to be picked up. She is a wonderful snuggler and loves to get hugs.

Taylor really wants to talk. She is babbling like crazy! She chatters away with all her important opinions. At the moment, she can say Mama, Dada, and something close to Brayden.

She loves standing up on everything. Her favorite places to stand are holding on to the stove handle and the warming oven handle. We are trying very hard to find her different places to stand, but she is very persistent! Her balance is getting really good. She can actually stand for about 20 seconds all by herself. The best part is that she is so proud of herself when she stands all alone. She throws her arms up in the air and has a huge smile. It is very obvious she is thinking look at me!

Her third bottom tooth has just started to break through! Still nothing on the top! She continues to be a great little eater. She loves pretty much any food we offer her. Her favorite foods are yogurt, zucchini, and any type of fruit. She really likes zucchini. She eats it steamed, grilled, pureed, and inside zucchini bread!

Our little girl has no interest in baby toys. We give her baby toys and she looks at them briefly and then crawls off to find Brayden's cars or her favorite toys, his Toy Story figures.

Taylor has two favorite stuffed animals that she sleeps with in her crib. They are a purple monster and a giraffe. In the morning, we always find her holding them or shaking them around.

Her hair is getting so long that I have started to put clips in it to keep it out of her face. The only problem is as soon as I put the clip in, she takes it out and sticks it in her mouth! The best part is when she holds up the clip for me to see it, gives me a huge smile, sticks it in her mouth, and then turns and crawls away as fast as she can.

Taylor is so close to walking and talking that I think the next few months are going to bring big changes!

Papa and Brayden Planting
To contact us Click HERE
The other day, my dad came over to help us plant! Each year, Papa comes and we go to the store to buy our plants and then he helps us replant them. Brayden is always excited around planting time and loves taking care of his crops. He especially likes planting with Papa!

This year he was a great helper! He carried the pots for Papa and helped him pour in the dirt.

Brayden has his own little gardening tools! We planted tomatoes, green peppers, and banana peppers.

I love that my dad and Brayden have this special thing they do together. Whenever my dad comes over, Brayden takes him out back to show him how much his plants have grown. My dad has a bunch of tomato plants out on his own deck and blueberry bushes in the backyard. Whenever Brayden goes to see Papa, he asks to go water the tomato plants and pick fresh blueberries. I still remember visiting my Grandpa White when I was little, and going out back to pick veggies in the garden. I love that Brayden will always have these special memories of his Papa!

Red Velvet-Cherry Cake Roll
Cake:
1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups cherry-flavored cola
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/3 cup buttermilk
3 large eggs
1 tablespoon red food coloring
2 teaspoons almond extract
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Confectioners' sugar for dusting
Filling:
4 ounces cream cheese, softened
1-1/2 cups cold heavy cream
2 teaspoons almond extract
1/3 cup confectioners' sugar
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Butter an 11" x 17" rimmed baking sheet and line with parchment paper; butter the parchment and dust with flour.
Bring the cola to a simmer in a medium skillet over medium-high heat and cook until reduced to 1/2 cup, about 10 to 12 minutes. Let cool.
Whisk the flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl. In a separate large bowl, whisk the granulated sugar, vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, food coloring, almond and vanilla extracts, and the cola syrup. Stir the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until just combined. Spread the batter on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for about 15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cool in the pan for 5 minutes.
Dust a clean kitchen towel, not terry cloth, with confectioners' sugar. Invert the cake onto the towel and peel off the parchment. Trim the cake edges. Begin rolling the short end of the cake around the towel and let cool completely on a rack.
In a large bowl, make the filling by whisking the cream cheese, 1/2 cup heavy cream, and the almond extract until well combined. In a stand mixer, whisk the remaining 1 cup of cream and confectioners' sugar until soft peaks form. Fold the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture. Chill until ready to use.
Unroll the cooled cake and spread the filling on it. Gently reroll the cake and transfer it to a platter.
